Phil Sokolof was instrumental in helping us lead healthier lives. Known as "America's No. 1 Cholesterol Fighter", for almost two decades he spent his own money on a crusade against high-fat foods. He founded NHSA - National Heart Savers Association in 1985 and placed full page ads in national newspapers - one of which he declared, "McDonald's, your hamburgers have too much fat!" Because of Sokolof, several fast food chains switched to vegetable oil to cook French fries, and large food processors stopped using coconut and palm oil in crackers, cookies, and cereals. He is credited by lawmakers with helping to bring about the nutritional label bill. Rep. Henry Waxman of California said of him, "He was a one-man show. He cared, and he was willing to fight for what he believed in."

Born in Omaha, after graduating from high school, he traveled the country as a 'song and dance' man for four years. He sings a medley from the Omaha Press Club show on this album.

Sokolof said that all of his work in "Heart Savers" was inspired by his late wife, Ruthie, who died at 56 of cancer. Sokolof died in April, 2004, at the age of 82. "He found a way to help people live longer, healthier lives, and I'm very proud of him," said his daughter, Karen Sokolof Javitch.
